Last night I went to the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) to watch Australia versus the West Indies in a Twenty20 match. Despite being English, being frequently exposed to weekend village cricket and growing up at a famous English school (Harrow) where Willow the King (the bat) and the Leathery Duke (the ball) were immortalised in very famous school song, cricket hasn’t really been my game. In fact the last time I think I attended a game was aged 18 at the annual Eton v Harrow match at Lord’s. Needless to say I was in the bar rather than on the field.
Well, all that changed yesterday. I went as a guest not expecting much and experienced the most incredible sporting spectacle I have seen in years.
As Australia's Daily Telegraph wrote this morning:
Excitement machine Warner launched three huge sixes and a boundary off the first over.
He raced to his half-century in just 18 balls - the second quickest half-century in T20 history, bettering his own mark of 19 balls set on debut 12 months ago - before departing for 67 off 29 balls.
Warner received a standing ovation after an innings that featured five fours, seven sixes ....

The UK's Guardian wrote: "It was Warner who stole the show with his man-of-the-match performance. In little over an hour he hammered six sixes and seven fours to register the joint fifth-highest Twenty20 international score and third best by an Australian.
He also posted the sixth-fastest international half-century in all forms of the game, with his 50 coming off 19 balls. Only Yuvraj Singh has hit a faster half-century in Twenty20 internationals than Warner, reaching the mark off 12 balls against England in Durban in 2007."
WELL, I AM HOOKED. YOUR INVITATIONS TO UPCOMING TWENTY20 MATCHES IN THE WEST INDIES, INDIA ... ALL WILLINGLY ACCEPTED.
Sounds like a good game, as far as cricket can be considered such ![]()
It was unbelievable. Sixes seemed to come every 30 seconds. His partner Shane Watson scored quite a few too. Everyone stood and cheered Warner off the ground when he was caught. It was like watching major US League baseball.
I'll second that. It's been the dreariest summer of cricket I can remember and Warner totally transformed this game. I went with a friend, his 8 year old son and his son's mate: I have been transformed from 20 Twenty sceptic to fan and the kids were so excited that was a spectacle in itself. A proper finale to an otherwise underwhelming season.
Did you guys stand up and clap eugenepurple when Warner left the ground?
Yes we certainly did. I thought it was the most extraordinary sporting feat I've seen in a while.
Australian cricket is back to their best
Except India and SA no team were able to match them in any format of the game
So jai what T20 is coming up in India?!
IPL?
Oh, ofcourse!
Yeah we are waiting for the carnival in March
Will get to see some new players this season, T20 specialists that is
Yes that was the great thing last night. Michael Clark the regular vice captain was the skipper. No Ponting. Maybe 3 other Test players tops inc Hayden..
Yes Hayden was the prolific scorer last two seasons. His presence in any team makes a real difference
And yes there is the Gilchrist who took over the captaincy from Laxman and won the championship for deccan Chargers
All say that they are past their prime but I feel they still have that midas-touch
