good? *sigh* You'll be clamouring for him to come back in about 1 year, if that really
You must place your faith Jude in the mooted six LibDems that are likely to join the Cabinet. Just heard on The World Tonight on Radio 4 that Paddy Ashdown might join the Cabinet as Defence Secretary?
Doubt that seriously. OMG! not Paddy Ashdown in Defence! Ugh!
Yes Erik, Brown's parting speech was moving whatever you thoughts about his time at the helm.
Paddy Ashdown? Am I being punk'd?
is this 1998?
It was excerpted on the former "Muhammad Ali of 2UE's" programme this morning.
Apparently it was Ashdown who persuaded Clegg that the LibDem manifesto should not call for Britain pulling troops out of Afghanistan.
Are we actually putting walking corpses into the Cabinet now?
Erik said : "It was excerpted on the former "Muhammad Ali of 2UE's" programme this morning."
Who is that?
judeinlondon said : "Paddy Ashdown? Am I being punk'd?"
Doubt it will happen.

More 1984. Whole new social order. First coalition since 1945.
Will they be exhuming David Lloyd George and popping him in there as well?

Now he WAS a schocker. Cash for titles and all that.
Nick Clegg presently addressing his MPs; Cameron doing same for Tories.
Maggie's still alive. If Cameron needs an advisor....
I'm emptying my bank account tomorrow
no way am I letting that walking disaster Gideon near a penny of it
Before the government can...

Is that the new Home Secretary then?
lol
Yes, did watch Cameron's constituency acceptance speech, always embarrassing those Monster Raving Loonies. Let's hope the MRL doesn't get himself into the shot of Cameron's first meeting with Obama. (Actually that might be a different kind of 'shot' were he to try).
I've always liked the OMRLP's Shadow Minister for Vegetables.
I gotta do some work now. Sleep tight, possums! All is now right with the world (and No. 10).
See you Erik.
"All is now right wrong with the world" fix'd
If you put to one side for a nano-second Jude your noble social conscience, the markets will be happy with this. Not because of a move to the right but because any Lab / LibDem pact even with the collusion of the fringe parties was always going to be on a knife edge.
I don't know if I'm happy that the markets will be happy with this
do they work for us or do they make decisions FOR us? I thought people voted in parliaments, not stocks and bonds and gilts
Go back 20 years pre Gordon Gekko Yes you're right.
this is truly depressing
Cheer up. Cameron is on the Centre of his party, further Lib Dem cabinet numbers confirmed ... 5 including Nick Clegg.
Nick Clegg should have been PM just needed another six months of campaigning ![]()
Maybe next time! There'll be voting reform after all which will help him and his party.
Next time? If Nick Clegg is still leader after this shambles of a coalition dissipates, I'll vote Tory at the next election
You may be right judeinlondon about this coalition dissipating. To say the two sides don't have much in common is a bit of an understatement. Do agree though with an earlier poster that the likelihood of the rainbow coalition holding was probably even more unlikley - for altogether different reasons. Labour's audacious attempt or rather Mandelson's and Alistair Campbell's plan was always going to be a challenge to pull off and I think that's why Clegg sided where he did.
Brown should have stuck to his guns in October 2007 and secured a 5 year mandate from the British people. The paradox of Brown's career is that of a man blessed with intellectual gifts, drive and ambition cursed with a debilitating self-doubt that easily turned to mistrust and suspicion.
Sarah Brown and his young family (whom he acknowledged so gracefully) should provide much needed balm in his hour of defeat.
My word... I look forward to tomorrows press, seems they are all giving statements from their beds...
The first coalition government since 1945.All unconfirmed but originating from good sources:
Chancellor of the Exchequer: George Osborne
Chief Secretary to the Treasury: Vince Cable
Foreign Secretary: William Hague.
Health Secretary: Andrew Lansley.
Schools Secretary: David Laws (not Michael Gove).
9.45pm: Liam Fox will be Defence Secretary.
...and Danny Alexander confirmed as Scottish Secretary.
you say 'all unconfirmed'... check out wikipedia they seem to be on it!
Not here. Show us the link Rob? (Suspect not a lot being announced now until London wakes up ...

The Browns leaving Labour headquarters after saying goodbye
re; wikipedia, I just searched under each MP's name...
ps: That's the happiest I've ever seen Mr Brown - should have done it sooner!
Hmmn. Don't disagree but many would say the Daily Mirror would say that, wouldn't they!
Did like their graceful opening comment:
It would be churlish not to offer congratulations to an incoming Prime Minister.
While the Daily Mirror has fought hard to stop David Cameron getting into Number 10, we are prepared to acknowledge that since his Conservative Party won the most seats and has managed to forge an unlikely alliance with the Liberal Democrats, he achieved the opportunity to form a Government.
That is the essence of our magnificent multi-party democracy and it is heartening to see it flourish. But our good wishes to Mr Cameron do not extend to hoping for a long period of Government for this most unwieldy of hybrid beasts.
