Michael Jackson...genius or nutter?

Personally I believe his music will live forever...sadly his childhood never game him a chance to truly enjoy the benefit

I used to like his music when I was young, but he hadn't done anything good in a while.

No question that he lost the plot for quite some time, but who wouldn't under the scrutiny he has been...I just could quite get past the thing about a coloured guy wanting to become white...that for me was the point where he just lost everyone...along with his 100th nose job

I don't really care what he did with his personal life. Which is why his death doesn't matter to me either way. It's just really strange seeing everyone now talk abt 40 yrs of his history. I mean, he wasn't even on the radar for the last 10!

To be honest, this is one of the least significant things to me in the past month.  It's not like his music changed the world.  You might as well say that I should be mourning Farah Fawcett because at least her image had an effect on my teenage psyche!

Well, you can't negate his impact on the pop world.... He was good at what he did. In the beginning at least.

Compared to who?  I mean he didn't bring anything new to pop music - the soul/motown thing was in place when he was still a child, and the music that he created was generic and lacked depth and soul.  There are a couple of his songs that I enjoy, and the film clip for Thriller was fantastic, but he didn't create Paisley park studios like Prince, he didnt change the way that we though about pop like the beatles, he didn't try to bring about world change like U2 or John Butler.

Not comparing him to anyone. Not saying he changed the world. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But he did make music people enjoyed. That's a substantial impact.

Okay.  I will agree that he created music that people enjoyed.  I'll put this event on par with the break-up of the Spice Girls or NKOTB.

LOL. In agreement with you there.

Unfortunately, the media is gonna milk this one for all its worth. There will be no other news for a while. And that irks me more than anything else.

Meh

I avoid most mainstream media, so not a huge issue for me.  Although I will have a smile on my face whenever I hear "Don't stop 'til you get enough" for a while.

Aww man, that's the thing. I don't do MSM, but even the tech blogs etc have jumped on it!>:-O

Informed comment by Puppy OTR and agree with dekrazee1 we will have media overkill. Unfortunately I do think his personal life mattered, ONLY because of what is very likely to have been extremely inappropriate actions with minors. There were just too many pieces of unrelated reports on this (and ofcourse his own interviews and settlements) to think there was nothing to substantiate these claims.

As for the Topic title? Suspect like many people with degrees of genius, he suffered from madness.

the mans a weirdo should have been sent to the chair years ago for his sins against children. freak.

Have to agree with Kurgab here... weirdo!

Now we gonna have to deal with weeks of MJ songs on tv and radio... sad... really...

Genius and nutter, if you ask me. The only thing that disappoints me is that his death was entirely out of character with his life. His death was quiet, normal and private. It should have been ostentatious, bizarre and witnessed by millions, preferrably live but at the very least captured on hundreds of cellphones and posted to the intertubes.

Well, the dying was quiet, but the death will be a spectacle, don't you worry abt that:)

I will still never forget seeing him live at Parramatta Stadium in about 1986 or 87?   I was a teenager and hadn't been to many concerts.  That moonwalk was amazing!!!
