I take my 13 year old and her friend skiing for a quick trip just before they go back to school. Great snow by Oz standards and much fun. We all ski quite hard and we encounter one small accident on the slopes where Tamsin jumping and somehow connecting her knee with chin on landing resulting in a punctured tongue. Anyway no great drama.
Saturday I meet the girls at the foot of one of the runs and we call it a day. Stomping down the steps carrying skis I slip, fly through the air and twist my knee. Ligament out of sorts (hopefully stretched not torn) but that was the end of skiing for me. Apparently a really quite high proportion of skiing accidents don't happen on the slopes but occur in situations like mine. So next time you venture into the snow, take good care walking in ski boots ...
Same with rugby, most 'accidents' happen at the bar after the game!
Ha Ha.
Was it bad enough for you to see a doctor?
Jury still out on that one.
What I do know now (and why do I always forget this) that putting the leg up and packing ice in the first 72 hours make an extraordinary difference and seriously accelerates the healing time.
Ouch.....!
Are you on crutches or leg brace?
Youch, looks bad. I tore my ankle ligaments a couple of years ago. I was always told about R.I.C.E which is rest, ice, compression, exercise are the key to recovering from those kinda accidents.
hope that helps
Thanks Unicronic.
@ Rob. Just wish I could have said it was because I was skiing like a champ.
Most accidents happen when you least expect them otherwise we would be able to avoid them ![]()
It's so true that ski-ing injuries are nothing on apres-ski injuries. Moving further off-piste, sofa-related incidents are a major issue. Horribly under-rated too. For instance, I am suffering from sciatica (according to my fiancee, who to be fair has no medical training whatsoever) which she blames entirely on my sofa and bed and my close association with them of late. If that wasn't enough my friend, Jim, ruptured his knee ligaments getting up off a sofa, had to have surgery and couldn't walk without crutches for 4 months. So sofas are more dangerous than ski slopes too.
Alex, not sure what to say, about the knee. Take it easy...
How is Tasmin's tongue...can't give you all the attention...![]()
Sorry to hear about your knee... sounds painful! Let me know if you want me to bring around some chicken soup xx
So eugenepurple your fiancée thinks the sofa and bed were the cause of the sciatica? Were you alone?
OR, is she saying you spend so much time on each accommodating item that she never sees you vertical and can thus only surmise you are suffering from sciatica?
Is that for real about your friend Jim? My oh my.
To Jo & Cami. Both Tamsin's tongue (if her constant chat is anything to go by) and my knee are improving rapidly. I'm hoping so because what happened to sofa-Jim is a crutch too much to bear.
Very solo on the sofa like a good fiance should be... I'm not sure what she's trying to say as I still don't know what sciatica is - I'm not a very good hyperchondriac unless I know what my symptoms should be. Sounds nasty though. And if I wasn't so thick-skinned I might feel she were implying somehow that I'm lazy... Luckily it went straight through to the keeper. And yes the story re Jim is very real. Worse than most ski-ing prangs and he never even made it fully to his feet, let alone out the house!
Sorry to hear about the knee Alex, I know from experience that they can be very painful.. I hurt my right knee very badly playing squash years ago and it still gives me pain during the cold weather...But of course this is about skiing accidents so I won't go into detail, but my son in law had never been snow skiing and went down to Perisher for a week with my two sons and after a day of falling over and trying to stand up etc, he actually managed to complete a run on the beginners slopes and got so excited he started waving his arms around, fell over and somehow managed to fall with the end of the ski pole in his ribs, cracking one in the process. He was determined to keep going and spent he rest of the week skiing in severe pain, but at least he was a reasonably competent beginner when it was time to return home.. I imagine his companions laughing at him the whole time didn't help either..![]()
wow I'm learning new stuff every day.... i shall treat the sofa as the enemy from this day forth. what with my 'ravers' knee from the late 80's i can't afford any slip ups...
