Social search is here

Google just announced it, and it's only available in the US for now.

Here's a video which explains it:

hmm...    i feel it a bit intrusive.. as much as they say  im in control of it...

and  did he mean to leave that comment there on the left hand side  1.52 mins in to the clip??

It actually works for Australia too, you just need to go in Google Experimental and activate it

Hmm... didn't notice that the first time. Good spot koogle:P

Oh, awesome Loic! Thanks!

When you search for something you extend the "+Show Options"

and go into "Social" (sorry google.com only you were right)

As to the issue of intrusive.... I already depend more on social stuff for things like recommendations. Definitely something I'll find useful.

Will just have to think about what I make available to Social Search from my end.

Bah! Google can be so annoying with their .au... Keeps redirecting me back there

It works it works!!!
Whoa, this is cool.

You da man Loic!

It doesn't index everything yet (some tweets only for example), but it's kind of strange.

Yeah... some of the results are so obscure!

I am not really sure about this service : it gives you articles from your friends (Friendfeed, Twitter... soon Facebook..), your RSS feeds... but we use Google rather than asking our friends or checking our RSS feeds, no ?

I think it depends on what you're searching for. Like when I'm in the market to buy something, I lean towards recommendations from my social graph, instead of a general google search

Plus with Twitter and FB's own crappy search system, you can now (hopefully) find what you were looking for from your friends!

and the classification is strange :

Why is that strange?

Why Google considers an article from my feed more important than my actual friend (some of my feeds are appearing after too)? Why this article is the most important ? Also I get the point of having my friends' friends (in the video), but not actually sure to be clicking on it. I would ask first "who is this guy" before maybe clicking.

Ahhhh....

So maybe they take content more into account? Over relationships I mean

Yeah would be definitely in line with Google's strategy (delivering the best content available). They try to include the social search as a feature rather than actually into your search (letting people decide if they want it or not).

At the same time, if I want to buy something, I think my friends did let comments on forums, and these won't be indexed in the results (except if your friends posted their profile from certain forums in their Google Profiles page..)

hmmm... yeah...

At the moment blogs seem to have the highest weighting.

Social Search is a bit like Wave, then? Everything gets more personal.
